4 Telltale Signs That Your Child Needs a New Mattress

As an adult, it's easy enough to notice when you need a new mattress. However, children can't identify mattress issues themselves, so it's important to watch out for the signs below. Anything from frequent waking to bedtime allergies could indicate that it's time to purchase a new mattress for your little one.

1. They often wake up during the night

Does your child struggle to fall asleep, wake frequently or wake up too early? If they were previously a good sleeper and nothing else has changed, sleeping problems could indicate an issue with their mattress. An old, worn or unsupportive mattress won't be comfortable, which can cause regular waking. It's important to consider the mattress even if other issues, like nightmares, seem to be at play, as the two could be feeding into one another.

2. They sleep better in other locations

Does your child sleep like a baby on the sofa or in the car, then lie awake all night in their own bed? This is a clear sign that it's time for a new mattress. If you're still not sure, try having your child swap beds with a sibling for the night, or observe their sleep while on holiday or visiting family. If they're sleeping well everywhere but their own bed, the mattress is a likely culprit.

3. They complain of aches and pains

If your child is complaining of aches during the day, don't dismiss them as growing pains. Just as adults might wake with a stiff neck or sore back after sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress, children can experience muscle pain and stiffness as they outgrow their mattress. Take a good look at their mattress and check for any sagging, dipping or creaking if you suspect it's the cause of their pain.

4. They suffer from allergies at night

Many children suffer from allergies to mould, dust mites and other common household pollutants. These allergies often flare up at night, drastically impacting sleep quality. If your child is sneezing, coughing, itching or dealing with watery eyes, there's a good chance that allergies are to blame. Once you've ruled out other potential issues, purchasing a hypoallergenic mattress and bedding set is a great way to make your child more comfortable.

Getting a good night's sleep is essential for your child's mental and physical wellbeing. Maximise their chances of sleeping well by investing in a high-quality mattress today.
